5-day hiking expedisjon from Longyearbyen to Isfjord Radio

ACROSS NORDENSKIÖLD LAND 5-DAY HIKING EXPEDITION FROM LONGYEARBYEN TO ISFJORD RADIO Pre-Departure Day: On the day before the adventure begins, gather in the reception area of Basecamp Hotel at 3 PM. This is where you will meet your guide and fellow travelers. Take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the program and learn more about the equipment. If you need to do any last-minute shopping, the sports shops will be open until 6 PM. Day 1: At 8 am, you will be picked up from your hotel and transported to Bjørndalen, also known as Bear Valley, located just outside Longyearbyen. We will follow the path of the reindeer into Bjørndalen and embark on our first mountain climb up Fuglefjellet, reaching an elevation of approximately 500 meters. From the mountain's summit, you can marvel at the stunning views of Isfjorden while we pause for an expedition lunch. Afterward, we will continue our westward hike until we reach the first campsite. Together, we will set up tents and prepare dinner. In the evening, we will visit the abandoned Russian mining settlement of Grumant. Upon returning to the camp, we will retire to our sleeping bags for a well-deserved rest, taking turns as polar bear guards throughout the night. All meals are included, and we will be staying in tents. Day 2: After breakfast, with a magnificent view of the Arctic fjords, we will pack our bags and lace up our hiking boots for another exciting day on foot. We will descend to the coastline and reach Coles Bay, an intriguing site with its own history of Russian mining. Here, we will stop for lunch before crossing the river in Coles Valley and continuing our journey. Eventually, we will make camp for the night. After a long day of hiking, it will be delightful to relax at the camp, enjoy dinner, and savor the tranquility of the Arctic in good company. Before retiring to the tents, we will establish a schedule for the polar bear guarding during the night. All meals are included, and we will be staying in tents. Day 3: Following breakfast and packing up our camp, we will proceed westwards towards the Russian mining town of Barentsburg. Today's hike is slightly longer than the previous days, but the terrain is relatively flat and easier to traverse. Along the way, we will pause for a warm expedition lunch and pass by Barentsburg in the afternoon. While we have encountered several old Russian settlements in the past days, this is the only active town, housing around 400 residents and one cat. Continuing a bit further, we will set up camp for our last night in the wilderness. All meals are included, and we will be staying in tents. Day 4: After breakfast, we will dismantle the camp and begin the day with a short boat ride across the fjord to the Russian water station. Once there, we will once again lace up our hiking boots and embark on the final kilometers towards Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel. Depending on the weather, we can choose between an inland route or a coastal route. Upon reaching Isfjord Radio, our hosts will welcome us with warm beverages. This will be followed by a memorable Isfjord Radio dinner, offering a culinary experience you won't soon forget. All meals are included, and we will be staying in double rooms at Isfjord Radio. Day 5: Start your morning leisurely, savoring the fantastic breakfast at Isfjord Radio while enjoying the dramatic scenery surrounding the former radio station in the western region. Perhaps you might want to visit the sauna before lunch? After a final taste of Isfjord Radio's cuisine, it will be time to return to civilization. The boat departs at 17:00, allowing you see the same landscape you have walked through from a whole new angle. We arrive in Longyearbyen with great experiences in our luggage.
